Pete Boland would receive the last-place finish due to a brake problem on lap 2 of 66. The actual race spanned for ; with the pole position speed at and the average race speed at .〔 All 26 of the drivers on the grid where American-born males.〔 Lee Petty would retire from NASCAR after this race.〔(【引用サイトリンク】 Lee Petty's exit from NASCAR )〕 From the next race onward, his son Richard would race alone. Bob Welborn would make his second-to-last NASCAR appearance at this racing event. Walt Hansgen would become the first road course ringer by being at this track three times. He would drive a 1964 Chevrolet Chevelle during this race after driving a Ford vehicle at a previous race.
The race car drivers still had to commute to the races using the same stock cars that competed in a typical weekend's race through a policy of homologation (and under their own power). This policy was in effect until roughly 1975. By 1980, NASCAR had completely stopped tracking the year model of all the vehicles and most teams did not take stock cars to the track under their own power any more.
